So on Saturday my German roommate arrived, Kerstin. She's from just outside Stuttgart and her parents drove her here in about 4 hours. So the last few days we've been hanging out quite a bit, getting to know each other. She's suuuper nice, in her 3rd year of university in Dusseldorf and is taking a mandatory study/work abroad year. She's the German assistant at my lycée but has to write a dissertation at the same time. AND it turns out, we're BOTH vegetarians!!! How crazy is that?!?! So we're super excited to do some French vegetarian cooking together, we've been commiserating about how hard it is to eat at French restaurants and find something edible. Anyways, we have a lot in common and have been getting along very well...she's got a boyfriend living in Greece at the moment so we're both in the same boat in terms of long-distance relationships as well. I'm really happy with how the roommate situation has turned out so far, let's hope the second one is just as easy to get along with!
Speaking of other assistants, all of us English assistants from around the area had a big meetup on Monday. There were about 15 of us in total and we gathered at Les Artistes then an Irish pub to get to know each other. Most people come from out of town so there are probably only 3-4 that I might see regularly that actually live in Nancy. Most of the assistants were American, seems I'm the lone Canadian here! As nice as it was to meet new people, my goal isn't to practice my English, so I need to start finding some other international friends too...
On a whim, Imanta, Michelle and I went to Luxembourg yesterday. Imanta had to vote for the Latvian parliamentary elections and the closest Latvian consulate is in Luxembourg, so we thought we should take advantage and visit the city. We met at the train station in the morning, and 20 euros and 2 hours later we arrived in Luxembourg city. It was raining a bit a quite cold, but we still had a fabulous day wandering around the city and visiting various historic sites and taking lots of pictures. The city is very quaint, for a capital, with the downtown nice and compact and easy to navigate. We walked all the way along the old ramparts of the city and through the upper and lower towns which had beautiful views of the city and its fortifications. Pictures soon to follow! While Imanta went to the consulate to vote (which, it turned out, she's not able to do until Saturday. Whoops!) Michelle and I headed to the Luxembourg art and history museum for a look around the prehistoric, Gallo-Roman and contemporary art galleries. Unfortunately the museum closed at 5 so we didn't get to see as much as we wanted, but you always need a reason to go back! We caught our train home around 6:30 and got back to Nancy by 8. It was super fun to get outside of Nancy (and France) a great start to many future travels!
